Green Energy News – The Latest Updates in the Search for Renewable Energy

Green energy continues to develop at lightning speed, and what our world’s scientists are coming up with is truly amazing.  #Electricity Express continues to monitor the web for the latest developments in the quest for clean energy.  Keep reading for some of the latest snippets from around the globe.

Norway Turns an Old Fishing Boat into a Power Plant

Green Energy Making energy out of an old boatIn western Norway, researchers have successfully converted a fishing vessel into a power plant.   Sound crazy?  To me it does, but for those with scientific minds, it’s an ingenious idea.  The basic idea was to put 4 large chambers into the ship’s bow.  Waves hitting the ship make the chambers’ water level go up.  The resulting air pressure increase drives a turbine in each chamber.  As the ship rocks because of a large wave, there is additional air pressure.  Electricity is produced because of a “fluctuating water column”, as explained by Edgar Kvernevik, engineer and Project Manager for Kvernevik AS.  The success of the idea opens up a whole new field of research for the future.

Using Shrimp Shells to Generate Electricity

Been Green takes on an intriguing new form in the disguise of shrimp shells.  Shrimp shells contain a large amount of the materials chitin and chitosan.  Researchers at the Queen Mary University of London used hydrothermal carbonization to create solar cells from the shrimp cells.  Right now, it’s not the most efficient way to produce energy, but give them points for thinking outside of the box.

Harvard University Students Make Liquid Fuel out of Solar Energy

More energy from plants. Scientists find new ways to produce energy, clean and efficient.Alternative energy research continues to grow.  Harvard University has reported that bacteria can be used to change solar energy into liquid fuel.  Scientists first used an “artificial leaf,” which caused the sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.  A bacterium then converted hydrogen and carbon dioxide into the liquid fuel isopropanol.

I admit it, that theory goes completely over my head, leaving me grateful for the scientific minds out there that work so hard to improve our world.
