The Best Places to Vacation During Hurricane Season

Best Electricity Company in Texas

A hurricane will ruin anyone’s vacation fast.

Yet don’t worry if you can only travel between June-November, the traditional hurricane season.  With a little planning and thought, you can still enjoy a tropical vacation free of terrible weather.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao

The Caribbean’s ABC islands lie outside of the traditional hurricane belt.  Located near South America, they are a very easy flight from Miami or San Juan.  How hurricane-proof are they?  Anything can go wrong, of course.  But between 1871 and 2011, only 22 hurricanes or tropical storms have passed within 60 miles of this chain of islands.  The temperatures are pretty constant year around as well.  All three islands, in particular Bonaire, are diving meccas.  I can personally recommend Curacao, which has some excellent resorts, incredible food and beautiful beaches.

Trinidad and Tobago

These islands, also near South America, are mostly outside of the hurricane belt.  Trinidad has mountains, beaches and a well-developed tourism infrastructure to match.  Tobago is its more relaxed, less-known neighbor.  A college friend of mine was from Trinidad.  If he was any indication, Trinidad’s people are some of the friendliest you’ll find on earth.

The Odds of a Hurricane Striking a Specific Island

The Huffington Post ran an article listing the likelihood of a hurricane hitting Caribbean islands.  While I’m not sure how scientific it is, check out the Bahamas.  These islands near Florida are listed with a hurricane chance of once every 5.64 years.  My best friend honeymooned in Jamaica in September, and its chances are once every 9.4 years.  The point, of course, is that either a hurricane will hit or it won’t.  You really can’t know what will happen.

Vacation Prices During Hurricane Season

There’s a reason why prices are lower at this time of year.  Kids are back in school, and of course, it’s hurricane season.  Prices will skyrocket around Christmas time and again in January when clear weather comes again.  Compared to these prices and those of Spring Break, hurricane season is a bargain.  By all means, take advantage of it.  Just remember to purchase cancellation insurance with a hurricane policy.  That way if the worst happens, you may be able to get a refund on your vacation.

Get Out There

In the end, the best advice is to research, choose wisely and purchase trip insurance with a good cancellation clause.  Your vacation doesn’t have to be a hurricane disaster.  The staff at Electricity Express wishes you the best and hopes you have a pleasant trip full of very mild sunburns and adventures.
