Turn Off the A/C and Save Electricity

We are getting this kind of weather that allows us to turn off the A/C and save electricity.

I usually recommend leaving the thermostat in “auto” mode. However, if you check the weather and you see that is forecasted cool weather for the next few days, it’s ok to turn the air conditioner off.

How to use your thermostat to save electricity.

If you are going to follow this idea to turn off the A/C and save electricity, well, just move the switch to the ‘off’ position. However, here is how to manage your thermostat if you are not following this idea.

Generally, we have 3 kinds of thermostats. The manual thermostat, the programable thermostat, and the smart thermostat.

Always try to move the temperature gradually. This is because if the house gets too cold or too hot, then you change the temperature and it’s far from reaching that temperature, well, it will take a lot of time and electricity to reach that desired temperature. So, your idea of saving electricity by managing your thermostat will not work.

To start with the manual thermostat, this one you must move the lever manually. Otherwise, I suggest the following: do not move the thermostat to drastic temperatures. Gradually move the lever, one or two degrees per hour, until you reach the desired temperature.

The programable thermostat is one that has a digital display where you can set the days, times, and temperatures for those times of the day. Again, never set a very high or very low temperature when no one is at home.

Now, the smart thermostat is the one that can learn your habits. When someone is home, follow a schedule if you program it that way. You can manage it from your cell phone. With that said, now you know that this thermostat must be connected to your Wi-Fi.
