What will happen if I don’t pay my electricity bill?

We are so busy with our daily tasks that sometimes we forget important things. Our home electricity is one of those things we might forget. What will happen if I don’t pay my electricity bill?

Left in the dark?

To tell the truth, we rarely forget to pay our cell phone bills. Actually, it has been noted that our communication with others is one of those things that, nowadays, we can’t live without. On the other hand, not paying for our electricity can harm our need to connect with others.

As a matter of fact, without home electricity, we won’t be able to charge our electronic devices. Well, we can but it would be a challenge. Charging your phone from the car, or office. Nah, I rather do it while I’m sleeping. No to mention all things that can get damaged by not having home electricity.

Can't charge your electronics?

Can’t charge your electronics?

This is what could happen if I don’t pay my electricity bill:

To begin with, you will get a disconnection notice, yes, by mail. But remember that we are so busy and rely on automatic things, we forget to check our mail constantly. You may get a text or a call regarding your late payment. In all honesty, I have said so many times, “yeah, I’ll deal with that later…” and then I missed a deadline.

Next, either way, the electricity company try to reach you. If no action is taken, you will be powerless at home. Usually is about 10 days after the disconnection notice has been sent.

When do disconnections will happen if I don’t pay my electricity bill

As I mentioned, a power cut-off will happen 10 days after the disconnection notice was sent. Now, this disconnection is sent to the utility manually. This means that the actual disconnection of electricity will happen between 9 am and 6 pm. In other words, while you are at work.

Penalties: What will happen if I don’t pay my electricity bill

First, I must say that I will be breaking my electricity contract. Second, a late payment fee will be charged. Third, and the biggest change, the electricity rate may change for a variable higher rate. Then, a reconnection fee will be charged.

Namely, I will increase that debt by about 30%. It is a debt because I already use the power and I can get in trouble.

Worst case scenario if I don’t pay my electricity bill.

To say nothing of, a switch hold will be placed on my meter and I will not be able to change energy company until I pay the debt in full.

My suggestion to avoid all this drama:

Autopay. That’s it!

However, if we keep it on auto-pay, we miss important things, like reviewing the bill and seeing if your consumption is normal. In the same way, we wouldn’t see if our saving energy efforts are working.

Also, not all energy companies offer auto-pay discounts.

A better solution I would say, go prepaid. As prepaid electricity features:

  • No contracts to break.
  • Daily usage and balance notifications. Thus, see how much energy you use every day.
  • Payless Power gives a 20% discount when the account is auto pay.
  • And much more.
