Saving Electricity In the Shower

Here at Electricity Express we could hardly blame you for overlooking your bathroom in your hunt for ways to save money on your electric bill.  In addition to being the smallest room in the house, most people would rather have a root canal than give up their hot showers.  But even if you can’t cut back on your bathroom time, there are still plenty of easy ways to save money on your electric bill.

Electricity saving ideas that will help the environment too.

  • Take a look at that faucet.  Aside from being annoying, those pesky drips can cost you, especially if the water is hot.  According to one water provider, in some cases, you could lose more than $200 every month http://austintexas.gov/department/find-and-fix-water-leak.  Sound extreme?  Maybe, but remember that leaks only get worse over time.
  • To turn off or not turn off a light.  Many of us forget to do this one simple thing.  For those people with small children, it’s impossible to not have the bathroom light on 24/7.  Yet whether or not turning off a light actually saves money is tricky, as it depends on the type of bulb being used and the cost of electricity.  See this U.S. Department of Energy website for a detailed explanation: http://energy.gov/energysaver/articles/when-turn-your-lights.
  • Change the time you shower.  No, you don’t have to give up that relaxing time in the bathroom.  But remember that especially during Texas summers, our air conditioners work harder to combat the incredible heat that we all live with.  If you take a hot shower during the hottest part of the day, you’re only making your air conditioner work harder.  Try showering during the early morning when the weather is cooler, and your air conditioner won’t be so stressed.
  • Take care of your air-conditioning vents.  Look up.  See that vent in the ceiling?  That’s your AC vent, and if it’s full of dust or grime, it’s time to clean it out and keep it from draining your wallet.  For tips on how to do this, see this link: http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/household-hints-tips/cleaning-organizing/how-to-clean-air-vents-in-your-house.htm.
