Google science fair tests the brightest teenagers
This isn’t your average science fair. The Google Science Fair is an online competition open to all students between 13 and 18 years old. 90 regional finalists were announced in June, with the final 15 contestants selected this month. In September at Google headquarters in Mountainview, California, these teenagers from around the globe will show off their best ideas to a panel of expert judges https://www.googlesciencefair.com/en/ in hopes of winning the grand prize.
Our future’s best minds come from many places, including Australia, North America, India, Russia, Ukraine and Europe. The focuses of the science projects are as diverse as the finalists’ backgrounds. One American 14-year old, Trisha Prabhu, takes on cyberbullying. Arsh Dilbagi, 16 and from India, seeks to help people with disabilities. Another contestant, 17-year old Australian Cynthia Sin Nga Lam http://inhabitat.com/teens-brilliant-portable-device-simultaneously-produces-clean-energy-and-fresh-water/, has designed and built a device that purifies wastewater and produces hydrogen to generate electricity.
The judging is tough. Among other things, ideas are ranked on their ability to inspire others, capacity to make an impact and excellence of method. The judges are equally formidable. Beth Moses, for example, is an aerospace engineer for Virgin Galactic, the first commercial spaceline www.virgingalactic.com. Dr. John Sotos diagnosed a genetic cancer syndrome in President Abraham Lincoln. Professor Steve Cowley works for the UK Atomic Energy Authority. They and their colleagues will look very closely at each project to choose the absolute best that these teenagers have to offer.

What is the Grand Prize? Get ready for this. The winner of the Google 2014 Science Fair receives a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands off South America with National Geographic Expeditions. He/she will also visit the Virgin Galactic Spaceport and take home $50,000 in scholarships. It is truly remarkable that a teenager will be able to experience so much, and his/her future will change dramatically.
