My A/C Unit is a Joke
Since I rent an apartment I know I can’t choose my appliances, but this is a joke. I really wanted to change apartments, and so I didn’t slow down and make a better decision about living in an eco-friendly and energy-efficient place. It is what it is and lesson learned. Take your time deciding and you will save money. Yes, nicer places have higher rents, but over time, their better appliances conserve energy and help your budget too.
A central air conditioner unit can cost from $450 used and $1200 new at Lowes. We have said multiple times that the a/c unit pulls most of the electricity in a home. So in this post we will review the impact on your utility bill by both an efficient a/c unit and an older unit like mine.
I’m trying to get my electricity usage to the minimum. Even so, it’s still nearly impossible to get better than $3/day, which in a hot summer is not bad for a 900 sq feet apartment.
Let’s say a central a/c unit lasts about 12-15 years, and we put a non-efficiency a/c unit’s daily cost at about $1. This is $365/year. With a used a/c you will cover the cost in a little more than a year. With a brand new a/c unit, the cost will be covered in about 3.3 years. If these numbers don’t impress you, let’s do the conversion. If you don’t upgrade your a/c unit, in the lapse of 10 years your a/c unit might be taking more than $3,500. For some homes it can be 1/3 of the mortgage. Well, if someone wants to keep giving away this kind of money, call me and I will stop by and collect it. It sure is a nice paycheck.
I may get a deal with my apartment complex. If I buy a new a/c unit, when I leave that place I may be able to take it with me.
